Once in the door, the multitude of flavors—made onsite for the last 16 years by our master ice cream maker Erik Robertson—captures your taste buds’ full attention.
Gelati Celesti is a family place. Every one of you, our customers, is part of the Gelati Celesti family.
Gelati Celesti began as a collaboration between father and son. In 1984, Peter Edmonds and his father, John, opened the business with a shared vision and the single goal of making the very best ice cream possible, thus establishing the Gelati Celesti tradition. Extending the family commitment to quality ice cream, Peter’s three brothers are all in the ice cream business in other parts of the country. Rounding out the Gelati Celesti family, our team of longtime employees has as much passion for good ice cream as all the Edmonds. In fact, they enjoy scooping our ice cream almost as much as they enjoy eating it.
In 2003, John passed away, leaving Peter to continue the ethic that still drives the business. As we carry on his vision today, Peter spends most of his time traveling, skiing, and hiking. Peter’s long time friend, college buddy, and Gelati Celesti ice cream fan, Steve Rosser, continues the Gelati Celesti tradition. But, Peter’s never too far away to make sure we are fulfilling Gelati Celesti’s original mission.
It’s our commitment to quality that has earned customer loyalty over the years. There’s always a family that has moved away from Richmond years ago but still makes their way to Gelati Celesti when they are back in town. There are customers who began eating Gelati Celesti ice cream as children and now bring in their kids to pass down their own family traditions. And, there are numerous customers who proudly remind us that they’ve been enjoying our ice cream for 10 years, 15 years, or even since the very beginning in 1984.
Gelati Celesti uses the best ingredients from all over the world: cocoa from France, pecans from Georgia, and cream from the best dairy farms in mid-Atlantic region. Our Italian equipment minimizes the air whipped into our product, making it uniquely flavorful, thick and creamy, and flat out special. We are honored and humbled to have been named Best Ice Cream by area publications 12 times.
In addition to the more than 85 flavors that we rotate seasonally and throughout the year, we offer made-to-order ice cream pies and cakes personally decorated for any occasion. When you just can’t get enough, we will hand-pack your favorites in quart or pint containers so you can have Gelati Celesti at home or wherever you get the craving. We also make banana splits, milkshakes and sundaes with your choice of any of our premium ice cream flavors.
